Digitalizing the advisory activity for greenhouse-grown vegetables in the South-East of Spain

CHALLENGE Vegetable production under greenhouse is an important sector in the South East of Spain. A higher level of greenhouse monitoring would be beneficial to increase efficiency however many growers are reluctant due to the costs and uncertainty of what technologies to use. On a less costly level, CAJAMAR have developed DATS which can measure local greenhouse conditons, aid in the transfer of advice between grower and farmer and enhance record keeping for example.

Implementation of the dynamic fertilizer plan

CHALLENGE There is immense potential to decrease inputs without yield losses through precise nitrogen application. Satellites and real time data currently enable this precise estimation and allows for the redistribution of nutrients within the field. To accelerate the use of precision farming SEGES has developed several IT-tools, which are all built into one dashboard called, “Crop Manager”. Today only a small percentage of Danish farmers use Crop Manager.

The Initiative for Agricultural Development of Kosovo is addressing the agricultural sectors by enhancing the quality and quantity of domestic products, as well as raising farmers' knowledge and competitiveness through services provisions to over 500 farmers in yearly basis.

CHALLENGE: Producers, especially small farmers, lack access to knowledge on production techniques, investment planning, and information flow. A mismatch between demand and supply in advisory services stems from the absence of an affordable, effective, and transparent agro-consulting market. As a result, advisers need skills, competencies, and tools to gather and analyze data, aiming to improve farm management practices and increase both the quantity and quality of fruits and vegetables in Kosovo.

AIM: Prioritize training and adapting the digital tool (in local language) in cooperation with AGRIVI to facilitate its adoption and implementation for IADK advisory services. The digital tool improves communication between farmers and advisors, enabling each of the 40 farmers with farms exceeding 200 hectares to digitize their operations and manage key activities efficiently. With a variety of features, the tool help farmers with land preparation, nutrition (calculation), plant protection inputs (organic and nonorganic), planting time, the distance of planting for the main crops.

AIM: TGAIAdvisors aiming to enable a more digitally active farm and farm advisory community by focusing on bridging the digital divide evident between, and within, farm and agricultural advisory services. This action was particularly important for the agricultural advisors in Greece, considering that no similar action targeted to this audience has been carried out in the past. Although a small scope of action in relation to the totality of untrained advisors in Greece, the interest of trainees became clear, first to be informed about the digital tools and test them with the support of the trainers, but also to determine the way to improve their capacities and be trained on tools, which are familiar to their colleagues in other EU countries, however, not to them.

CHALLENGE: Beef and dairy farmer are risking to suboptimize their production, more holistic viewpoint is needed, both from the farmer and the advisor. Digital tools are needed in order to provide the right advisor services. Regardless of how many years of experience, the advisors and farmers need to adjust their interactions to be more digital. We see gaps in holistic mindset related to digital tools.

AIM: We will achieve higher understanding of the involved advisors and farmers in these decision support tools. The result is implemented solutions that increases the productivity at farm level. As a bonus there is an increase of knowledge transfer from experienced advisors to novice advisors

CHALLENGE: Agricultural consultants and farmers have recently been challenged in the direction they are farming: is organic carbon accumulating, declining or unchanged in their fields.

AIM: To encourage people engaged in agriculture to accelerate the implementation of the latest soil agrochemical research and land assessment material, providing farmers with specialized knowledge on the use of individual soils to produce the most abundant and high-quality crop products, reduce the risk of environmental pollution and increase organic carbon stocks.

Vetwerk provides software and training to veterinary dairy practitioners for providing veterinary herd and cow health support, in Belgium and The Netherlands. Vetwerk is an initiative of veterinary practices, for supporting veterinarians in bringing their knowledge and skills to value on dairy farms. Animal health is essential for sustainable livestock farming.

CHALLENGE: Veterinary practitioners have an immense amount of practical and theoretical knowledge about herd and cow health management, that can help farmers in ensuring both animal health and production on their farms. The DATS Vetwerk Basis provides structure and supportive tools, to support vets and farmers in getting the best results out of veterinary herd and cow health support services provided by the vet. To get the best results our of this, vets and farmers should both be able to use the DATS Vetwerk Basis, and to optimally co-operate when the vets provides his or hers veterinary herd and cow health services.

AIM: First we focus on training of dairy veterinarians in using the DATS Vetwerk Basis for veterinary herd and cow health support during the dry period and fresh cow period. Secondly we support the trained veterinarians in providing a training to their clients, dairy farmers, on herd and cow health and on how to optimally mutually perform veterinary herd and cow health support activities, in order to achieve optimal co-operation and get the most benefit out of these.

Our sample testers will use this app on a number of different farm types to assess the tool and its relevance and benefits in conducting a full on farm slurry storage assessment.
